In today’s world, there are so many options when it comes to
carpet cleaning. As a mom, you should consider what impact each
of these methods will have on your child instead of which is the
cheapest and easiest. Some methods of carpet cleaning can leave
toxins, fumes and chemicals in your home. Some children can
become sick or have asthma attacks when exposed to these
elements. Here’s a look at four carpet cleaning methods so you
can decide which one is the best for your family.
The most traditional way to clean dirty, soiled carpets is the
shampoo method. This type of cleaning puts lots of foam in the
carpet. After the foam dries, there is a residue that attracts
the soil, which is vacuumed up the next day. Carpet shampoo
products include very high levels of foam and chemicals. The
most common ingredient in this chemical is sodium lauryl sulfate
or one of its relatives. This is similar to the ingredient in
lots of hair shampoo. The difference in using this to wash your
hair and clean your carpet is that the shampoo is immediately
washed out of your hair but not the carpet. Plus, the residue
that builds up on the carpet can leave fumes that your children
will inhale and absorb in their skin when they play on the
floor.
Another method is dry carpet cleaning. No water is used.
Instead, a dry absorbent (containing small amounts of water,
detergent, and solvent) is sprinkled over carpet. It’s then
worked into the carpet with a machine. This agent acts as an
attraction to dirt and soil. The dry carpet cleaner powder is
normally organic, but there may also be polymers. Carpet must be
vacuumed before and after cleaning. With the extremely fine
powder types, indoor air quality can become poor. This cleaning
method has the advantage of no drying time for interim
maintenance, since little water is used.
The third type of carpet cleaning is the “Bonnet Method or
Carbonated Cleaning.” This method uses a rotary or oscillating
brush that has a stiff brush or drive block designed to drive
wet, damp or dry pads. The carpet is either sprayed with the
cleaning solution or the pads can be soaked in the solution and
squeezed lightly before putting the pad under the driving brush.
Sometimes, carbonated water is used. Again as in the shampoo
method, this type of cleaning will leave chemical fumes in your
home to affect the air your children breathe.
"Warm Water Extraction" or "Steam Cleaning" is the fourth
method and recommended by almost all carpet manufacturers and
carpet fiber producers. This is the only cleaning method
described as "deep cleaning". Unlike all other methods that
leave large amounts of cleaning agent in the carpet after
cleaning, this is the safest way. Since it uses water to remove
the soil and dirt, there are no fumes or chemicals left to harm
your children.
